Treatment of Pyloric Stenosis

Treatment of pyloric stenosis is relatively straightforward when the diagnosis has been made.  Presumably the diagnosis should definitely be discussed while discussing the treatment of pyloric stenosis.

The pylorus is the part of the stomach that joins the small intestine.  It is a very muscular portion of the stomach and if this muscle grows too much, it will narrow or even close off that area of the stomach.

Diagnosis, in terms of the treatment of pyloric stenosis, begins with an ultrasound.  This treatment of pyloric stenosis is not invasive and is a way for the doctors to look at the structure of the stomach and intestine.  What the doctor and ultrasonographer are looking for is a scan that shows increased thickness of the pylorus.  In infants the pylorus is usually smaller than 2 millimeters.  For a definitive diagnosis and indication of treatment of pyloric stenosis the ultrasound must show a thickness of greater than or equal to 4 millimeters.

If this diagnosis remains uncertain meaning treatment of pyloric stenosis isn’t warranted, a different method of ultrosonography is performed where it is perfomed serially, that is over a period of time during a single day.  What this does is illustrate the delay in emptying of the stomach, which should reinforce the hazy pyloric stenosis diagnosis.  If this ultrasound confirms it, then the physicians will provide surgical treatment of pyloric stenosis.

This surgical treatment of pyloric stenosis includes relieving the tension on the pylorus by cutting through the muscle encircling it.  This treatment of pyloric stenosis leaves the innermost layer intact which is important.  Within a day of the surgical treatment of pyloric stenosis the infant should be able to tolerate feeding.
